Crock Pot Apple Butter

Posted on September 24th, 2008, by Erin

Another apple post… I put this into the crock pot after dinner and it was ready in the morning for my husband to put into canning jars.  We used the inversion method of canning, and hope none of us get botulism.  (I do plan on boiling when I make applesauce later this week.)

Also, for your viewing pleasure, some orchard pictures.

The husband’s artistic apple shot:

My attempt at a good orchard shot:

Here’s the apple butter an hour into the process (after its hour on high heat, sugar looking melty, everything still looking like apples…)

And after…

What’s that, you say you see scones?  Why yes you do, and you’ll see more of them soon…

Ingredients:

  • 10 apples (about 4 pounds) cored and chopped (I didn’t peel mine, obviously)
  • 3 c. sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp cloves
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Place in crock pot and stir.  Cook over high heat for 1 hour.  Reduce heat to low.  Go to sleep (let cook 9 – 10 hours on low.)  Mix with immersion blender.  Remove lid and continue cooking for 1-2 hours or until desired consistency (it will firm up a bit as it cools.)  You can either jar it (boiling or not, your call on risk factors) or freeze it.

Warm apple butter is to die for! I made some over New Year’s to use up some of the apples that were starting to get a little mealy. With cream cheese on a bagel- yum!

What size crock pot did you use?

We have my parents’ ancient crock pot, so I’m not sure, but judging from comparable ones I’ve seen, it’s 4 quarts.
